Hound Of The Baskervilles Essay Example For Students
Hound Of The Baskervilles Essay Task: To identify the ways in which Arthur Conan Doyles novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles can be considered a piece of gothic literature.à Gothic literature is a mysterious and grotesque style of fiction writing, often based on legends and myths. The gothic style of literature deals with eerie events and sombre settings. Gothic stories are usually set in forests; moors; hills or other remote areas, away from the boundaries of normality and civilization. The gothic period is believed to have begun in 1764 and the popularity of the genre continued to 1840. Around this time, a belief in supernatural occurrences and witchcraft arose; beliefs, which count towards the origins of gothic literature around this time, as peoples interest the genre, grew. The first famous gothic author was Horace Walpole who wrote The castle of Otranto. Many other well known gothic writers followed, including Ann Radcliffe; Edgar Allan Poe; Mary Shelley and Arthur Conan Doyle. Famous gothic titles include The legend of Sleepy Hollow, Frankenstein, The Raven and Dracula. The settings of gothic stories include those of manors; halls; castles and other residences of wealthy characters, often lords and ladies. These buildings, from the way they are described, have a distinct gothic style of architecture. The architectural features of these buildings include pillars; gargoyles; arches and points; oak interiors and dark dà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½cor, resulting in buildings which are majestic and mysterious, impressive and oppressive. Atmosphere is strongly evident in gothic stories and the general atmosphere is a dreary; mysterious; dark one. This atmosphere is frequently portrayed using severe weather conditions such as rain and snow. The stories are usually set in the decaying days of autumn and the dark days of winter and the horror normally occurs at night.à Typical characters of gothic literature include those of dogs or wolves; lords and other rich people. Most gothic story lines comprise of a vicious, evil male who is abusive towards innocent, helpless females.à Arthur Conan Doyles The Hound of the Baskervilles contains many of these features of gothic literature therefore I would class it as a piece of gothic literature. As already mentioned gothic novelists usually give a negative depiction of the landscape. The landscapes featured in the novels are normally described as hostile and grim. The depressing and dreary landscape that is a feature of gothic novels is also apparent in Arthur Conan Doyles The Hound of the Baskervilles. Chapter 6 of The Hound of the Baskervilles features the first detailed description of the landscape, when Sir Henry Baskerville is traveling across the moors for the first time to arrive at Baskerville Hall. In this chapter, the landscape is described either through Dr. Watsons observations or through Sir Henrys comments. The first description of the moors comes from Dr.Mortimer: there rose in the distance a gray melancholy hill, with a strange jagged summit. The gg sound in jagged is harsh and discordant, which gives the reader the impression that the landscape is hostile and dangerous, particularly as, by definition, the word jagged means sharply textured. The hill is described as strange which tells the reader that the landscape is mysterious. This benefits a gothic novel, as mystery and danger are key elements of atmosphere in this genre. Melancholy shows the landscape as being dreary and creates a sombre mood. In addition, in chapter 6 Dr. Mortimer describes the landscape as a forbidding moor which gives a rather frightening impression of the moor, with forbidding meaning menacing. The hard and forceful consonants within the word add to the sinister impression as they convey a lack of warmth and a sense of unfriendliness. Further into chapter 6 the landscape is described again: the long, gloomy curve of the moor, broken by the jagged and sinister hills. The ong and oom sounds, which are elongated, create a mysterious impression when linked to the meaning of the phrase as both the length of the expanse of moorland and the depth of the gloom are emphasised. Adding to this, the harsh gg and sin sounds, in jagged and sinister, create an intimidating feeling of the landscape; firstly because of the roughness of the gg but also because of the hissing effect at the start of sinister. .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb , .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb .postImageUrl , .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb , .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb:hover , .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb:visited , .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb:active { border:0!important; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb:active , .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u387fc8402ec7562e6a823209e274b1bb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: 'The Ostler', 'The Old Nurse's Story' and 'The Red Room' EssayThe dismal landscape of the moors is also described in later chapters of the book, for example gloomy slopes of hills in chapter 14 which creates a very disheartening feeling about the landscape, as does ill-omened moor, in the same chapter, meaning that the moor has a bleak feeling about it, created by the fact that the prefix ill means unlucky, bad or evil. The impression that the reader is left with is that nothing fruitful can be gained from being close to the moors; they can only bring discomfort and disaster. In conclusion, it is clear that Arthur Conan Doyle describes the landscape in a way that corresponds to the style of gothic literature. The novel is set around remote moorland, which is portrayed to the reader through the frequent repetition of certain adjectives, which depict the landscape negatively. This technique is common to gothic literature as is the creation of an atmosphere that is a dismal, threatening one, suggesting that Conan Doyles writing is typically gothic.

The borrowing system Essay Example For Students
The borrowing system Essay In the play, ââ¬Å"Dollââ¬â¢s Houseâ⬠by Henrik Ibsen, portrays the protagonist, Nora as a very child-like character who understands a manââ¬â¢s world better than she will let on. She is treated very similarly to a doll; she is played with and treated like a child. Her husband Torvald Helmer does not believe that Nora understands the world of money and business. Nora doesnââ¬â¢t let on that she does, and she plays along to this facade of being someone with no knowledge on the outside world. It is evident that she is aware of the world of business when she says ââ¬Å"â⬠In business, you know things called quarterly payment and â⬠¦. We will write a custom essay on The borrowing system specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now I couldnââ¬â¢t save much out of the housekeeping moneyâ⬠(Ibsen, 161). From this quote, it is evident that Nora is very much aware of the borrowing system in the business world. She understands the system of borrowing money, and paying it back in quarterly payments. By her knowing this information, it is clear that Nora is not just the puppet of Torvald, but an intelligent woman who is informed of the worldââ¬â¢s events. Furthermore, Nora proves that she knows about the world of men by saying, ââ¬Å"Last winter I was lucky enough to get a lot of copying to do, so I locked myself in and st writing-often till after midnight. Oh, I was so tired sometimesâ⬠¦so tired. Still, it was really tremendous fun sitting there working and earning money. It was almost like being a manâ⬠(Ibsen, 162). By Nora using the words, ââ¬Å"it was almost like being a man,â⬠she demonstrates the difference of societyââ¬â¢s perception of what men and women are supposed to do. By saying that she was similar to a man, she is implying that she had taken part of a manââ¬â¢s world, thus proving that she does understand a manââ¬â¢s world better than she will let on. She also demonstrates that she had worked for money, which is unheard of for a woman. If she had worked, she had done a manââ¬â¢s job. In society, the manââ¬â¢s job is to go to work, while the womanââ¬â¢s job is to stay at home and care for the children and make the house look pretty. By her working, and by her use of words, it is evident that Nora is a hardworking woman who knows the struggles of working hard for money. Lastly, when Nora tells Mrs. Linde that she was the one who had come up with the money to save her husbandââ¬â¢s life; Mrs. Linde refuses to believe her due to the fact that women canââ¬â¢t borrow money without their husbandââ¬â¢s consent. In retaliation, Nora had said, ââ¬Å"Ah, yes she can-when itââ¬â¢s a wife with a little flair for business-a wife who knows how to set about itâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Ibsen, 160). She implies that she has a ââ¬Å"little flair for businessâ⬠, which proves that she knows more about the manââ¬â¢s world. She also suggests that she knew how to set about it, proving that sheââ¬â¢s intelligent. This proves that Nora is not an ordinary woman, but a woman who can understand business matters very well, thus proving that she understands the world of a man very well. Although she understands this world, she never shows that she does. She plays along with her husband; he believes she has no knowledge on this subject matter. Nora suggests that they can borrow money, and when Torvald warned that the people they borrowed from will come looking for them, Nora said ââ¬Å" Them? Who bothers about them? Theyââ¬â¢re just strangersâ⬠(Ibsen, 149). In reply to this, Torvald had said, ââ¬Å"Nora, Nora! Just like a womanâ⬠(Ibsen, 149)! This demonstrates Noraââ¬â¢s acting skills as a typical woman. She doesnââ¬â¢t let on that she is aware of the matters in a manââ¬â¢s world. .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d , .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d .postImageUrl , .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d , .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d:hover , .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d:visited , .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d:active { border:0!important; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d:active , .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4fb9db15b47d96cc2b37f238d136f99d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: THE MANY SIDES OF HAMLET EssayShe explains the importance of her playing this role of the innocent, helpless wife when she tells Kristina, ââ¬Å"Besides, Torvald has his pride-most men have- heââ¬â¢d be terribly hurt and humiliated if he thought he owed anything to me. Itââ¬â¢d spoil everything between us, and our lovely happy home would never be the same againâ⬠(Ibsen, 161). From this, it is evident that Nora only puts up with this act just to please her husband. She does not show her true, intelligent colours to her husband, but acts as the damsel in distress wife that he wishes her to be. In conclusion, Nora merely pretends to be a doll-like character in front of her husband. In reality, she is a very intelligent, well-informed woman who has a lot of knowledge on the business world, but never shows that she does to her husband. 2. In this play, ââ¬Å"A Dollââ¬â¢s Houseâ⬠by Henrik Ibsen, there are two female characters that have experienced the world very differently. Mrs. Linde and Nora were childhood friends who have recently met again. They reflected on each otherââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ lives, and it is clear that Mrs. Linde had been through more hardships than Nora. This is because she had married her husband for money, to support her family, but once her husband had passed away, she had to support herself. Because of her accomplishment, she has a slight haughtiness to her personality. When Nora says, ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re proud because you worked so hard for your mother all those yearsâ⬠(Ibsen, 159), she responds, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t look down on anyone; but of course Iââ¬â¢m proud-and glad- to know that I was able to make Motherââ¬â¢s last days a little easier. When Nora tells her that sheââ¬â¢s proud of what she did for her brothers, Mrs. Linde says, ââ¬Å"I think I have every right to beâ⬠. From this, it is evident that Mrs. Linde clearly thinks that she should have the right to be proud of her accomplishment. She also believes that she is superior to Nora. Mrs. Linde had said to Nora, ââ¬Å"Well, good heavens, a little bit of sewing and that sort of thing! Youââ¬â¢re only a baby, Noraâ⬠(Ibsen, 158)! These phrases demonstrate that Mrs. Lindeââ¬â¢s terrible experiences changed her character for the worse; it made her more arrogant. Unlike Mrs. Linde, Nora has had a different experience in the world. She is treated like a doll at home, and plays the role of a helpless wife. When Nora tells Mrs. Linde of her husbandââ¬â¢s new post at the bank, she says, ââ¬Å"Oh, not just what we need! Heaps and heaps of moneyâ⬠(Ibsen 155)! This shows her childlike nature when she says, ââ¬Å"heaps and heaps of moneyâ⬠. She plays into the role of the innocent wife, who cannot support herself. Thus, gets excited when there is a lot of money involved. Furthermore, Nora says to Mrs. Linde, ââ¬Å"No, you first- I mustnââ¬â¢t be selfish today- Iââ¬â¢m not going to think about anything but your troubles. I must just tell you one thing, though. Do you know weââ¬â¢ve just had the most wonderful stroke of luck- only the other dayâ⬠(Ibsen, 155). In this, Nora first says that she will listen to Mrs. Linde, but then she ignores that and carries on with her life story. Nora was too excited and happy that she just told Mrs. Linde about the new bank manager post, being inconsiderate to her feelings. She was being too hyper and peppy that she could no longer hold that piece of information within herself. This further demonstrates Noraââ¬â¢s childlikeness. Since Nora receives everything she desires, and is treated similar to a pet, she acts very childlike for a grown woman. Compared to Mrs. Linde, Nora has not faced many tragedies. .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c , .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c .postImageUrl , .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c , .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c:hover , .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c:visited , .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c:active { border:0!important; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c:active , .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1f26e3d7a925bc8c23593c8efd4a0b6c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Atomic Bomb EssayNora did have to save her husbandââ¬â¢s life, yet she is so subtle about it. She does not use this as an advantage and become arrogant like Mrs. Linde. Instead, she hides the fact that she too has worked hard for someone else, and pretends to be childish instead. Mrs. Linde has openly faced many challenges, and overcome them, which made her haughty. On the other hand, Nora is seen to have not faced many problems; however she has secretly overcome many challenges. She hides this and acts childish, proving that she is humble. In summary, it can be said that the different experiences of the world one has, shapes the personality of oneself.

Bias in the Media essays
Bias in the Media essays News broadcasters have a basic job , that of supplying their viewers with the facts. With this occupation news anchors and reporters can remain seen as human beings, humans with feelings and opinions. However, their job is not to reveal these to the public. Viewers should be able to feel confident that a program will be sharing factual information on subjects and then they will be able to form their own opinions and judgments. Unfortunately with many of todays newsmakers this ideal can not always be made possible. The number of democratic party members is very high in journalism. In fact in a 1996 survey, as reported in a book titled Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News by Bernard Goldberg, a considerable eighty nine percent of journalists voted for Bill Clinton in the presidential election compared to only a forty-three percent vote from the general American population. In particular primary news sources, CNN, CBS, NBC and ABC have long been viewed my many people as possessing and distributing a liberal tone (1). Many viewers are easily swayed to more liberal ways of thinking due to the structure of the reporting by these newscast stations. Many viewers however can realize that the women and men of television are political partisans. They take the facial expressions, aside comments and tone of voice, used by these professionals light heartedly and it has been accepted. However it becomes unaccepted when their political opinions bring about falsities delivered to the public as facts. On September 8th of this year CBS news anchor, Dan Rather, reported documents concerning President George W. Bushs Air National Guard service during his nightly show 60 minutes. Details of the documents included that Bush had been receiving requested special treatment in order to avoid his service commitments. Mr. Rather spent most of the following week defending his sources and the l...
